As a part of Women’s History Month, we share the tale of Lillian Lewis

Lillian Lewis once referred to as training “the maximum valuable gift” she had ever obtained.

Lewis become born in 1904 on a small farm in jap Mississippi, the 9th of thirteen children. Her father owned the land he labored, but little else. He didn’t have sufficient money to teach his youngsters beyond the general public education colleges.

An older sister stepped in and despatched Lillian to Tougaloo College, and from there she received scholarships to Howard University, supplementing those awards with summer time jobs. She taught at South Carolina State College and earned a master’s degree from the University of Chicago, then taught at different often Black faculties within the South. In 1945, she became the first Black lady to get hold of a doctorate degree from the University of Chicago.

Lewis came to Winston-Salem in 1947 to train biology at what became then Winston-Salem Teachers College. Her husband, John, become a Winston-Salem local and also took a process with the faculty there.
